The US Academic SystemThe higher education system in the USA covers Undergraduate Bachelor degrees, Diplomas, Associate degrees and comprehensive Graduate degrees (Masters and PhD’s/ Doctorates). The academic calendar runs from the beginning of September to the end of May, with universities using semesters, trimesters or even quarterly academic divisions within the academic year. The educational system in the USA is unique in its out of classroom experiences with a vast array of clubs and societies that play an active role in student life on campus.
Cost Of Living/ Studying
The cost of studying in the USA can range anywhere from $15,000 to $70,000 per year. The exciting part about the USA is their scholarship opportunities. School books will set you back anywhere from $500-$1000 per year, depending on your field of study. Living expenses, such as meal/ housing plans, are included in the tuition cost. The remainder of your expenses will be based on your own lifestyle (going out to eat, joining Greek life, etc).
In order to study in the USA as a foreign student you will need to attain a student VISA (J-1 or F-1). This requires filling out an application with the US embassy, which only grants student visa’s for accredited higher education institutions in the US. As an International student in the US, you have the opportunity to work on campus for the duration of your studies. After your studies, you are able to obtain an Optional Practical Training Visa (OPT) which allows you to work in your chosen field for 12-36 months after completing your studies. Some companies may sponsor you for a H1-B Temporary Worker Visa, allowing you to continue living in USA as long as you work for that company.
