Soccer Scholarships

USA University soccer scholarships are among some of the most popular scholarships in all of college sports. There are two kinds of soccer scholarships available, 1) Full Scholarships and 2) Partial Scholarships.

A full scholarship will cover all the general expenses associated with USA college life and your soccer career. Costs, such as books, housing, food, tuition and soccer kit will be covered. A partial scholarship, on the other hand, may vary from a few thousand dollars to $50,000 per year. Depending on the percentage you receive, you will be expected to pay the remaining balance. You can do this in a multiple of ways, the two most popular are: 1) You can use your high school marks to win an academic scholarship to pay the balance, or 2) you can take out a loan.

Scholarship amounts given to soccer teams vary due to 3 main factors: 1) The sports association that the college competes in, 2) the sporting division and 3) the institutions own budget.

NCAA soccer teams are entitled, but not forced, to give the following amount of scholarships per team. Division 1 (D1) mens soccer teams can give 9.9 full scholarships while D1 women can give out 14. Division 2 (D2) men’s teams can give out 9 scholarships, while women are eligible to distribute 9.9. Division 3 (D3) college teams do not give out athlete funding at all, regardless of the sport. But, you can win an academic scholarship to a D3 institution and play soccer.

Colleges who compete in the NAIA and the NJCAA also give out generous soccer scholarships. The NJCAA give out 18 full scholarships to both their men’s and women’s soccer teams while the NAIA follow the same scholarship distribution rules as the NCAA D1 teams, mentioned above.

The best way you can get a soccer scholarship in the USA is by playing for a professional academy or a highly competitive club structure and getting good grades in school. Students who only play school soccer are not playing at a high enough level for coaches to award them with a large soccer scholarship. Your soccer skills and talents need to be backed up with good academics and SAT scores. You need to have a GPA of at least 2.2 and an SAT score of 1100 to play soccer in the USA. Another important requirement is high-quality video footage to send to the coaches. College recruiting is changing, and more coaches are turning to online recruitment methods where video is playing a crucial role.
